Upon announcement, Episode Three was given a tentative release window of Christmas 2007, however complications and frustrations with the episodic format led Episode Two to release later than planned, and largely uprooted plans for Episode Three. It was known at the time that episodic content for Half-Life 2 was in development, with Gabe Newell stating that he viewed the episodes as being comparable to a third entry in the Half-Life series, however it was not previously known how many entries were planned. Valve originally announced Episode Three in May 2006, shortly before the release of Half-Life 2: Episode One. Although Episode Three was to be the last Valve-developed episodic Half-Life 2 title, senior members of Valve Corporation have confirmed that Episode Three would not have been the end of the Half-Life franchise. This week's Half-Life giveaway doesn't appear to come with any new free-to-play marketplace tweaks, which is probably for the best.Half-Life 2: Episode Three was to be the third episode in the Half-Life 2 story arc, and the final entry in the Half-Life 2 series to follow protagonist Gordon Freeman as he leads a human resistance against the Combine forces. Dota 2 launched in 2013 as an inherently free-to-play game, while popular online shooters Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2 eventually received free-to-play updates. Valve's free-to-play history mostly revolves around games that function as an online service.
But if you missed those sales, or the series' PC-gaming heyday, it's hard to beat the low, low price of "free." (And if you've never owned a Half-Life game before, check out the endless rabbit hole of amazing, community-developed mods for both games that you can download and enjoy for free.) Valve has frequently discounted the ever-living dickens out of its most classic series, with each of the series' disparate releases plummeting to $1 each during various sales. Since the games, and their connected expansions, have been available for so long, this promotion may be moot for many Steam users.
